I have written many articles and instructional guides for novice guitar players looking to make their guitar play smoother as well as articles for advanced guitar technicians looking to learn new techniques. My articles cover every guitar repair subject from guitar intonation and nut replacement to full guitar setups.

To start, pickups are based on two separate but related principles: If you place a coil of wire near a magnet and induce a change in the magnetic field, electricity will be generated in the coil’s windings.

Also, if you place a piece of non-magnetized ferrous metal near a magnet—a screw, nail, a paper clip, whatever—it too will become magnetic.

Although it is impossible to perfectly intonate your guitar because of its equal temperament tuning, it is possible to come to a compromise with a proper set up.

The Fender serial numbers tell the story of the company over the years.

There’s a chronological sequence of where your guitar sound starts and finishes.

The energy from your fingers and pick is transmitted to your guitar strings, which disturb the pickup’s magnetic field, thus affecting a coil of copper wire within the pickup and generating an AC signal that trails out from the two ends of the coil to connect to any tone and volume controls your guitar may have.

Unfortunately, the serial number placement is sporadic and many serial numbers over lap between years and models.

In many instances, there is no exact known date for a specific guitar. I want to help you understand how to tell the age of your Fender as well as any Fender you see...

In addition to the rumour that Mark Knopfler used the Orange Squeezer compressor in the 70ies with Dire Straits for his unique guitar sound, here is a confirmation coming from an interview with Mark himself: In the September 1979 edition of the Portuguese magazin ‘Musica & Som’ we find an interview with Mark, most likely dating from the gig in Freiburg, Germany, June 2, 1979.

Mark was asked for hig equipment and answered: MK: “Quanto a guitarras utilizo duas Fender Stratocaster, um modeleo de 1960 e o outro de 62, umo Telecaster; tres Gibson (Les Paul Modelo 1958 – L3 acustica – Blonde 335); uma Baldwin Double 6-12 cordas, tres Ovation (Adamis 12 cordas – Adamis 6 cordas – Legend 6 cordas), duas National Steel.

I have also written a large about of instructional guides for building both electric and acoustic guitars that will be coming soon to
